I saw this foot switch and gave it a try. It works well to operate my garbage disposal. I mounted the switch sideways on the kick plate of my cabinet under my sink. It is easy to operate in bare feet, flip flops or regular shoes. It works so well my mother in law asked me to install one for her garbage disposal too!
I wanted some more foot switches for other tools, and finally tracked them down (I bought two more). I have one mounted on my band saw and the other as yet unmounted. Due to a (very) small shop size, the band saw is on a mobile base that sets down on two feet when I want it stationary. The switch is mounted on a thin piece of plywood that fits under one of the feet, holding it firmly in place. There is about 50mm/2" of plywood all around the switch giving lots of positioning flexibility.
The other switch I'll try on my router table once it is set up.
The "Billy Pedal Foot Switch" comes in two types, the "deadman" style that is a momentary contact switch - you must continue to press it to keep it on. As soon as you let up on your foot, its off.
The other type (I forget its name) is press once to turn the machine on and press again to turn it off and so on. In time, I intend to get one and see what I think of it for various tools.
The switch is made of heavy plastic and is plenty robust enough for my use (almost daily but certainly NOT all day long).
The switch is well made as far as it goes but there are some improvements I would like to see / will make myself:
1) Power cord put through the back end rather than by the side as shown.
2) Manual toggle switch to bypass the Billy Pedal - so you can just use the tool's normal switch normally. (I'll put it on the side where the cord originally came out.
3) A second plug so that a shop vac could be controlled simultaneously. While dreaming, a 10-15s delay on the vac plug would clear the vac lines too!
4) Finally, one footswitch that could be set to either style might be slick.
It should be noted that I have yet to open the switch to see if interior space is sufficient to permit any/all of these mods.
Bottom line, 'I'd recommend it to a fiend' as they say.
Time to go make some sawdust!
The switch is very light, so it needs to be fastened down. There are tabs on the front and back to facilitate this. I find that a piece of one by six board adds enough weight to hold the switch in place, but is portable enough to let you move it from machine to machine. However, I would recommend buying a separate switch for every machine that you want to control. I am already considering getting one for my lathe, my drill press, and my sander. one year later: The air blower on my saw broke. I plugged a three way adapter into my Billy switch, plugged my saw in one socket, bought a cheap aquarium pump and plugged it into another socket leaving me with a free socket to add a Shop Vac for dust collection once I figure out a way to connect it up. This way both my blower and my saw come on and go off at the same time
I suffer from neuropathy and foot pain. This switch requires so little pressure to operate that I can work on my saw for many hours without any discomfort.
